Saints at Bills Autopsy: Motivation to win >>> Desperation

The autopsy was delayed due to lack of interest. I decided I’d put as much energy into this week’s Autopsy as the players did on Sunday at Highmark Stadium.

If ever there were a game to depict playing down to an opponent’s misery, the Buffalo Bills managed to do so with great distinction on Sunday after defeating the New Orleans Saints 31-19 in what can only be described as a ‘stank’ of a game.

A stank is exactly what it was.

Since the ol’ Merriam-Webster defines stank as:

So stank is the choice word I have to describe this football game, despite great performances by guys like RB James Cook (22/117/1TD) and DT Deone Walker (3T/2S/2TFL). Josh Allen (16/22/2TD/1INT) did what had to be done. Cole Bishop had a very pretty one-handed interception. But the stats should impress no one, and they did not tell the tale of the quivering motivator gauge.

Did the players take this game less seriously because all of the press? Say it isn’t so, they would deny it to their dying breath, but one does wonder based upon watching some of those men tackle like a noodle in that game. The penalties. Lord please forgive my profanity but WTH was that sh*t all about?

Every season teams have games like these.

For some inexplicable reason there is a malaise that descends upon us all when we believe we just have to go through the motions to get to the other side with a win. It’s mental inertia. We all do it, athletes will do whatever it takes to refuse to give in to good old fashion entropy.

But gravity wins in the end, kiddies.

Fortunately for the fans of the Bills, Buffalo managed to score 30+ points again. I saw the game. I watched the highlights afterward as well. I still can’t figure out how they scored so many points emitting such an odor of stank.

This football game was truly unremarkable in the most unremarkable way. A win is a win, I get it. We all saw our beloved 90s teams win ugly. But this game was won by the Bills for one reason only.

Buffalo’s motivation to win was only slightly stronger than the sense of desperation the team from New Orleans displayed during the game. Sloppy play, stupid penalties. The Bills committed 11 penalties for 55 yards and were 3 for 10 on third downs. Yuck.

Time to regroup and hope Buffalo’s defense kind find some kind of pass rush and ability to get off the field on third down. Yes, it’s still early in the season. Yes, offense, defense and special teams are a work in progress, especially when many starters barely play in the preseason. Yes to all of the disclaimers you choose to use.

I just hate watching sloppy football.

Editor’s babble: Time to bring it up a notch this week. The Patriots have a good head coach in Mike Vrabel. They will come to play. Will the Bills? You can find this and more of my nonsense on Xwitter @RobynMundyWYO.
