SPLASH: Bills make unexpected move for ball-hawking safety, sign veteran C.J. Gardner-Johnson

On a day where the Buffalo Bills were making things official with a few of their early additions of the 2026 offseason, introducing the likes of wide receiver D.J. Moore, outside linebacker Bradley Chubb, nickel cornerback Dee Alford, and backup quarterback Kyle Allen to the local media, the team decided to make another addition to its free-agent crop on Thursday by signing veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million.

The move, although welcomed, was a bit of a surprise when it popped up across the screens of Bills Mafia worldwide Thursday evening when the deal was first announced by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero before a slew of other national media members scrambled to also add information on the signing.

Known as a supremely talented player, albeit with some extra character “baggage”, Gardner-Johnson joins the Bills entering his eighth season out of the University of Florida, and has spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens (practice squad), and Chicago Bears since coming out of the draft in 2019.

An original fourth-round pick of the Saints, the 5-foot-11, 210-pound defensive back has made the most impact of his career while playing in Philadelphia, which came in 2022 and again in 2024, with both years ending in Super Bowl appearances for Gardner-Johnson and the Eagles, including a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in the latter season.

The longtime veteran managed to rake in a career-high six interceptions in each of those stops with the team, with the tally marking tops in the league in 2022.

And while he may not have been quite as impactful at each of his other NFL homes, there’s no denying the Cocoa, Florida, native is a consistent performer, especially when he’s locked in and motivated.

The defensive back has collected 370 total tackles, 55 pass deflections, 27 tackles for loss, 20 quarterback hits, 20 interceptions, and three forced fumbles in 87 career regular season games, which includes 71 starts spread out across each of his previous stops aside from Baltimore, where he was merely on the practice squad for all of a week last October before latching onto the 53-man roster of the Bears.

Prior to his time with the Ravens and Bears last season, Gardner-Johnson began 2025 on the Texans where he played in three games, making 15 tackles and one quarterback hit in three starts, before being released midway through September.

However, once signed by Chicago at the end of October, the former Florida Gator standout found his groove again in the Windy City under his former defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen, whom Gardner-Johnson played for during his time with the Saints and who helped the defensive back earn PFWA All-Rookie honors in 2019.

In 10 regular season games with the Bears, Gardner-Johnson racked up 51 tackles, five tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, four pass deflections, three sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble.

He missed the wildcard round against the Green Bay Packers due to a concussion suffered in Week 18, but returned for the thrilling divisional round matchup against the Los Angeles Rams where he managed to collect four tackles and one pass breakup in the 20-17 overtime loss.

With all that said, if Gardner-Johnson is able to join Buffalo’s locker room and not be any sort of distraction — it’s a near slam dunk of a signing for President of Football Operations and General Manager Brandon Beane, especially given the team’s need at the safety position and the current landscape of the free-agent market.

And although there’s certainly something to the fact that Gardner-Johnson, who is known for having a bit of a strong personality, is about to join his seventh team in just his eighth season, there’s also no denying his immense talent — and an NFL locker room will always have space for talent, no matter what other intricacies may come along with it.

On a defense that has been depleted of playmakers over the past few seasons in Orchard Park, particularly last year when they had just 20 forced turnovers under former head coach Sean McDermott and former defensive coordinator Bobby Babich, the Bills could certainly use an influx of playmaking ability into the secondary like they had when Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer were in the primes of their illustrious careers.

Former second-round pick Cole Bishop showed flashes of that type of ability in 2025, but pairing him alongside Gardner-Johnson could truly unlock something special in new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard’s scheme next season, especially considering that Buffalo’s newest addition can truly play anywhere in the secondary — free safety, strong safety, or nickel — and plays with an “edge” that has been sorely missing at times on the defensive side of the ball.

For that reason, this signing could prove to be the most impactful addition of the 2026 offseason after all is said and done — he’s that good.

Only time will tell, however.

So, let’s revisit that assessment again in . . . let’s say February, shall we?
