The Buffalo Bills don’t win these types of games. The Bills 41-40 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on a field goal by venerable kicker Matt Prater on Sunday night after joining the team a mere three days prior was nothing short of stunning. For three and a half quarters of the game Baltimore took Buffalo to the woodshed.
Derrick Henry made it his personal business to eviscerate the Bills’ defense in embarrassing fashion. Lamar Jackson did his best to make Joey Bosa look like he was playing with two left feet.
By halftime I prepared myself for the Bills to lose the game. I was more disappointed about how easily the Ravens gashed Buffalo’s defense than upset the Bills might start out 0-1.

Then Josh Allen happened. And Matt Prater. In less then five minutes, Buffalo went from being completely manhandled to improbable victor. A statistical outlier. How many times do football fans have to see Josh Allen’s wizardry before they understand just how much of an outlier Allen really is?
Like from Pluto type outlier.
Of course the best part of any improbable victory are the reactions from the opponent’s fan base… or division rivals who all lost their respective games on Sunday. This dude is a regular Bills hater, so his reaction to their stunning victory at Highmark Stadium was particularly enjoyable to watch :)
Pure gold from Tyler.
Josh Allen can make any opposing fan base lose their minds. He’s done it so many times to Miami Dolphins fans it’s comical. However, make no mistake… the coaches at One Bills Drive have their work cut out for them in the upcoming game against the New York Jets. Though the Jets lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a nail biter 34-32 at the Meadowlands on Sunday, they played a very solid game. There are early signs head coach Aaron Glenn is putting the Jets on a path to success.
And isn’t it appropriate for a wild game like the Bills/Ravens matchup to come down to downright elderly kicker Matt Prater?
This game was absolutely one for the ages. While there’s plenty of heartburn to go around about how poorly Buffalo played on defense, there is little reason to panic just yet. Rookies played like rookies for the most part and the rust is showing on some veteran defensemen.
We will all remember where we were when Matt Prater’s field goal split the uprights to defeat the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football to open the last season at Highmark Stadium. If this game was any indication about how the Buffalo Bills will fare this season, make sure you have a cardiac defibrillator handy.
Editor’s babble: No words can adequately describe that game. This is one win fans will celebrate all week long and rightfully so. You can find me on Xwitter @RobynMundyWYO.
