Off on Road to Santa Clara: Bills’ Training Camp Day One

Wall-to-wall sunshine greeted the Mafia on our return to St. John Fisher on Wednesday morning. Very little if anything has changed with the setup, and all the logistics ran smoothly for me. Lunch hour traffic in Pittsford is out of our hands.

The first guy on the JUGS machine was long shot WR Jaylen Virgil. For the first time in Fisher Camp memory, Punter Brad Robbins is without competition. It’s weird seeing Robbins alone, but my first impression was good, including as the holder for T-Bass. It’s safe to say that all the #40 jerseys in attendance were not in support of him, at least not yet. Per usual, the defense wore blue, and the offense wore white, and no one was in pads.

Some of the high-energy eye-catchers in today’s calisthenics included Taylor Rapp, Michael Hoecht, Dalton Kincaid, Chase Lundt, and Brandon Codrington. While James Cook made a low-profile side entrance to the practice field, he worked hard and looked like an All-Pro RB at his absolute peak.

The main field had Kromer and charges working on hand techniques at one end. We see some punt return work at the other. One of these days we will time how much of a percentage of the Fisher itinerary is spent on special teams’ drills, but my guess is a solid third. Today’s PR reps were handled by Shakir and Coleman; I would guess that they wanted Codrington to get his DB work in. Every session that Laviska Shenault misses hurts his odds of making the squad. In the earliest 7-on-7 work, all done inside the 10-yard line, two things stood out to me. First, the connection between Elijah Moore and Josh Allen was remarkably smooth already. Second, with all 3 RBs, Shakir, Samuel, and Coleman and Kincaid as bigger targets, I don’t know what defense can cover that many options.

In the later 11-v-11 session, I will concur with Chris Brown that Christian Benford was the standout performer. If he doesn’t get frustrated, Keon Coleman will find most opposing CBs an easier endeavor than he faces daily in practice. Dalton Kincaid made a nice physical TD catch in traffic, and appears more sturdy in 2025. Maxwell Hairston and Tre White might be competing for one starting spot, but the mentor relationship will serve us well as Hairston eventually takes the spot.

The field goals and punts are always booming in the summer heat. Nothing else of note happened before calling it a day. If there is a general takeaway from today, it was a reinforcement of how deep this Bills team is, especially on offense. Sixth Round pick Chase Lundt adds another massive body to the already-deep OL. James Cook and Ray Davis might only be surpassed by the Lions’ Gibbs/Montgomery duo. Elijah Moore sure looks thrilled to be on the other end of Josh Allen passes. Two superlatives for RB Ty Johnson: best hair (inherited from Mack Hollins) and shortest shorts!

Editor’s babble: We cannot thank Joe Reagan enough for his effort to secure a training camp ticket. Joe can also be found on Xwitter @joer869.
