Training Camp

Training Camp Notes: Thursday, August 1

Weather:

The sequel to the “It Might Be Chilly” T-shirts could be “It might Be Sultry”.

We met an outgoing family at the Sutherland Shuttle Bus Stop and found out they were from Albuquerque, New Mexico! I was delighted to find them in the front row of the bleachers, and I had to snap a sign from a fellow Leo.

Welcome to training camp Terrell Burgess, #35 in your program. I got a better look at the newbie Kareem Jackson, who didn’t look anywhere near 35. That was the second unit at Safety today, with a combined three days of service. I did snap a nice shot of the guys they replaced on the sideline, Mike Edwards and Cole Bishop. We won’t see either the rest of this year’s time at Fisher.

The usual pattern of a half speed drill, stretching, and positional work ate up the first 45 minutes of practice.

11 v 11 work starts to blend together after seven days under a blazing sun.

Some of today’s standouts

Offensively:

Josh was solid today. It almost goes without saying, but I better say it anyway. BillsMafia is not pleased with that #12 rating.

The momentum for Tyrell Shavers continued; one of the day’s most picturesque completions was a TD strike lofted perfectly from Trubisky to Shavers.

James Cook had his best day, both running and receiving. A counter sweep was one of the most exciting runs at camp to date.

It took awhile, but Keon Coleman made a spectacular catch for those who were watching him for the first time. He was flagged for pass interference, but it was still impressive.

Dalton Kincaid has no comparable TE in the history of the Bills. He lined up outside today, which makes a fourth position he has lined up in.

Curtis Samuel made nice plays as a ball carrier and ball catcher. Since he won’t line up at TE, he will only leave opposing DCs guessing from three options. Hollins made a spectacular contested TD catch. I finally saw Shakir line up outside, which is a must to keep his snap count up.

Defensively:

The biggest hit of the day was delivered by Baylon Spector, who’s fighting for a roster spot

Today reinforced the idea that Damar Hamlin was ahead in the battle to start at Safety even before the injuries.

Kaiir Elam continues to impress, as does Ja’Marcus Ingram. Knock on wood, but when was the last time you felt this good about the Bills CBs heading into a season? Benford and Douglas are top shelf.

Is there anything better after training camp than a long lunch and football talk with old friends? If you don’t want the crowds of Bar Bill or the Pittsford Pub, here’s my unsolicited plug for Good Smoke BBQ in East Rochester, just five minutes from Fisher. Get the brisket chili as one of your sides and thank me later.
