Being one of six boys, Jim Kelly always dreamed of having a son. When he and his wife, Jill welcomed their son, Hunter, into the world on February 14, 1997, Jim’s birthday, they had big plans for Hunter to follow in his dad’s footsteps…
At just 4 months old, Hunter received the devastating diagnosis of Krabbe Leukodystrophy. Krabbe Leukodystrophy is a fatal genetic neurological disorder. Children affected by the disease greatly suffer as they rapidly lose virtually all-voluntary movement, and are not expected to live beyond their second birthday. Lifesaving treatment is available but only when a child is diagnosed prior to the onset of symptoms. By screening every baby for Krabbe at birth through newborn screening, children like Hunter can be given the chance at the healthy life they deserve at a cost of about $1 per baby.
