Most media attention is directed at what is wrong with the world today. I choose to challenge myself as a writer and story-teller and go a different route. My preference is to shed some light on the other side of the same coin; the bright side. Eventually even an old fossil like myself stumbles across a gem along the way through this walk of life.
One of the beautiful things about social media is the ability to connect with the lives of people you would otherwise have zero chance of ever meeting in person. As a bet with someone that I could not maintain a persona of less than 140 characters for more than a year on Twitter, I signed up for an account.
Of course being a diehard Bills fan, the first thing I did was add every Bills player who had an account on Twitter. Up came a player who has intrigued me since he was drafted in the four round, third pick, 100th overall; Mr. Da’Norris Searcy. I immediately followed along for the ride to see ‘whassup’ with Mr. Searcy.
It wasn’t long before the future wife of the Bills strong safety popped up on my time line. She immediately struck a chord in me with her plucky responses and hilarious pictures she posted on a regular basis. Now this was clearly a young woman with *special* written all over her 140 character 14 carat gold sense of humor and packed with wisdom beyond her years.
Hmmm. I wonder if Mr. Searcy realizes how lucky he is to have a wife who complements him so well. After Kiki was gracious enough to spend some time with me, it is evident that there are examples of role models and wonderful people everywhere you happen to be… on or off-line.
Kiki is a star in her own right, who somehow manages to balance being a daughter, sister, wife and friend, among other roles and
accomplishments along the way. She graduated in the top 10% of her high school class in 2008 in the Houston, Texas area.
She went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin on a track and field scholarship. She transferred in 2010 to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and again was on the track and field team. That’s where fate entered the picture and she met the young football player she would eventually marry.
Being married to an NFL player is only one of the many roles that Kiki has going in her life, and she balances them all by using the tools that her inspirational Mom, Cheryl Henderson, continues to provide. Cheryl is an example of achieving her own success through hard work and determination, and it is apparent her grit passed on to both her daughters.
Kiki is now embarking upon graduate school at Buffalo’s own prestigious Canisius College. Her undergraduate degrees are in Exercise and Sports Science, with a minor in African-American Studies. She is planning to complete her graduate education in Sports Administration.
And if that isn’t enough to keep her busy, she also has an active modeling career just getting started! When I asked her how she balances it all, she said that she is used to working hard and grinding. She also tries to balance her life around making things smooth for Da’Norris, so that he can focus his attention on his profession.
She understands the delicate balance between being supportive and constructive, while providing the necessary honesty to keeping it real. It’s clear if you read their Twitter feed that this is a couple who is always on the go, and where they are heading is speeding toward achieving great things in life.
Makes me smile and see what time and Title IX has done to provide opportunity for young women today to achieve great things, as well as personal happiness and healthy loving relationships along the way. When I was young, Title IX was more like a four letter word in collegiate sports. After seeing the fruits of how it has changed the lives of young women today, it makes me smile.
Mrs. Kiki Searcy is a shining example of what the future can hold for young women with determination and a passion for living life to its fullest. It is women like Kiki who make this old football granny smile and know the world will be in good hands when we are gone.
Let’s hope that the personal success of individual team members and their families will go on and manifest itself within the rest of the family that is this season’s Buffalo Bills. It’s time for this franchise to rise again from the ashes. It’s OUR time.
This is the first team in quite a few years that feels as if the right chemistry is brewing at One Bills Drive. Just remember that alongside of each one of those players is a special someone who supports them along the way, just like Kiki does with Da’Norris. Go Kiki and Go Bills!
