Special Interview with @NYFlava1, creator of “Buffalo’s Back”

The “Buffalo’s Back” Youtube video that started making the rounds on Twitter last week has received a lot of attention (and had a #BillsMafia shout out!) so we here at the Bills Mafia Blog decided to sit down with @NYFlava1, the song’s creator, and learn a little bit more about the song and the team that put it together.

Ok, so who are you and where are you from?
My name is Matt Diddy, and I’m from the Riverside area of Buffalo, NY. I’ve been a Bills fan since ’88. I work in Graphic Design & Advertising. In my spare time, I am CEO of NY Flava Entertainment. 3 kids, and the hottest wife on the scene wearing my ring. Life is good.

What’s the story behind the song?
The Buffalo’s Back (Bills Anthem) Video came about due to a need for a Bills Anthem. The Shout song is a classic, but there was a need for something more current with the times. The Jim Kelly Era had the SHOUT song, the Stevie Johnson/BillsMafia era has BUFFALO’s BACK. It’s my gift to the City of Buffalo, the Bills, and Bills Fans everywhere. This song and video is truly an anthem for the people.

I wanna thank my right hand man Paul E. Digital, The Rat, Guany4000, DJ Love, technoloG, and The Shadow Cons for all their hard work promoting the Buffalo’s Back (Bills Anthem) Video.

Give us a breakdown of some of the lyrics.

I think this hook captures the energy at the Rich Stadium during the Super Bowl glory days. That is why I use 80,000 as the number of fans at the stadium. as opposed to 73,000 or whatever the number is now. Regardless of the actual number, a Bills home game should sound like there are 80,000 in the stands. Plus, 80,000 fits the flow of the song better. I want this anthem to bring the energy back to The Ralph. Now we just need them to play this song after we score a touchdown at the stadium! Until that happens, play it in the Parking Lot at the Ralph while tailgating. Here’s the link to the FREE MP3.

ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN CATCH, YEAH STEVIE IS SWAGGIN’- 3 games, 3 TD’s for Stevie. Drippin’ Swag-Goo. Why So Serious?
ONLY DOWN 4 POINTS- A reference to 4th quarter of the Raiders game this year. I wrote these lyrics the night of the Raiders game.
CIRCLE THE WAGONS- a nod to Chris Berman, longtime supporter.
THIS IS OUR HOUSE – I wanted to make people feel proud to be a BILLS fan. “THIS IS OUR HOUSE” gives the fans some feeling of ownership of the franchise. I also wanted to pay homage to the SHOUT song, so that’s why I said THE BUFFALO BILLS MAKE ME WANNA SHOUT.

As far as the Buffalo’s Back lyric, self-explanatory. BUFFALO’s BACK!

And here’s an entertaining piece we like to call “Teach Me How to Paully” featuring Paul E. Digital.

Coming Soon from NY Flava: BUFFALO’s BACK REMIX (Bills Anthem Pt. 2) Featuring Guany4000. (I’d like to get Stevie Johnson to stop by The NY Flava Studio to record a verse on the Remix as well, but he hasn’t yet responded to my tweet. At the very least, Stevie, how about a 15 second intro? I can record it over the phone. Contact me @NYFlava1.)

How long have you been a Bills Fan, and what’s your earliest Bills memory?
Been a Bills Fan since 1988, before Zubaz even came out. I remember Ickey Woods doing the ICKEY SHUFFLE when we lost to the Bengals in the playoffs that year. Next year, it was Ronnie Harmon dropping the TD in Cleveland. The following year was the first of the 4 Super Bowls!

What is your favorite Bills memory?
Fav Bills memory has got to be Jim Kelly throwing an interception against Atlanta and then chasing the guy down, tackling him, and breaking the player’s leg in the process. Kelly was a tough S.O.B. Did you know he was recruited to be a linebacker at PennState?

Honorable Mention: Darryl Talley’s Spiderman sleeves.
Can #BillsMafia start a movement to convince Stevie Johnson to wear the Spiderman sleeves during the first Bills game in December this year?

What was the first Bills game you attended? Most memorable?
BILLieve it or not, the first Bills game I ever attended wasn’t until that Titans game on Christmas Eve a few years ago. My beautiful wife, Jenn, bought me tickets for Christmas. That was the game Vince Young ran wild.

Do you own any Bills jerseys, and if so what ones?
I’ve had bad luck with the Bills jerseys. Bledsoe, and Losman. Christmas Wish List: Throwback Jim Kelly, Stevie or Fitzpatrick.

Favorite current Bills?
Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fear the Beard.
Stevie Johnson. Why So Serious?
Fred Jackson. DIII.

Favorite former Bills?
Jim Kelly. Leader of the K-Gun. Legend.
Thurman Thomas. Best running/receiving RB in NFL History.
Bruce Smith. Boy, was I spoiled as a kid. Most Dominant Bill. EVER.

What is your favorite team to watch lose to the Bills?
Marv Levy Era: Squish The Fish.
Post-Marv: Splat the Pats!

Best tailgate food?
Marv Levy Era: M&E’s Honey Dipped Wings & Bocce Pizza.
Post-Marv: I’ve been seen in the Parking Lot of The Ralph with a Wegman’s Chicken Finger Sub.

Lastly, what does “Bills Mafia” mean to you?
#BILLSMAFIA is an unstoppable movement. I believe the Bills Mafia was responsible for at least 1% of the victory over the Patriots on Sunday!

About Del Reid

Del Reid became a Bills fan shortly after coming into this world, having been raised in a home that actually had a framed picture of OJ Simpson on the wall in the living room (until it came down in 1994). Del has always had a passion for bringing people together to celebrate things they share in common. As a result, he (quite accidentally) ended up co-founding the #BillsMafia movement among Bills fans in social media -- which to this point is the coolest thing that has ever happened to him aside from his relationship with God, his wife, and his two awesome kids. Follow him on Twitter at @mrdeadlier.

  1. While I’m not ready to replace the Shout song in any way shape or form, I do dig this song. It’s been an earworm stuck in my head all week and I’m looking forward to the remix!
