Mafia Monday Interview with @BillsFanatBirth

Welcome back to our second edition of Mafia Monday! This is an interactive element where members of the community can get to know each other and build unity by becoming transparent.

This week’s interview features the one and only Bills Mafian, @BillsFanatBirth. One the main things he’s known for is sending #BillsMafia smack talk out to other teams’ players… Great stuff!

How long have you been a Bills Fan, and what’s your earliest Bills memory?
@BillsFanatBirth: On Twitter, my tag is BillsFanatBirth, but I was 7 or 8 before I started following the Bills. Growing up on Long Island, everyone was Jets or Giants fans and the Bills weren’t really talked about much. I remember taking a family trip to visit my aunt in southern New Jersey(1986 or 87) and when we were driving down the Jersey Turnpike, I asked my dad about the football stadium. He said it was the Meadowlands and that the Jets and Giants play there. I said the first thing that popped in my head, “But we’re in New Jersey and they are New York teams”. Ever since then, I’ve been rooting for the only real New York football team, the Buffalo Bills! I guess East Rutherford doesn’t sound as glamorous as New York.

What is your favorite Bills memory?
@BillsFanatBirth: I was attending Florida State back in 1998 and my roommates were from Jacksonville. We had a big party for football Sunday at our apartment for the undefeated Jags versus the 2-3 Bills and when the game came on, everyone started talking bad about the Bills. I made bets with every Jags fan at the party that the Bills would win. Some bets were fiscal, some were for random acts of craziness, but the point is, I made a bet with each and every Jags fan. Well, every Bills fan remembers Doug Flutie’s boot leg scramble for a touchdown to win the game. I was shunned for weeks by my friends, but it was the best moment ever!

What was the first Bills game you attended? Most memorable?
@BillsFanatBirth: I didn’t attend my first game until 2003. I was stationed on a Navy base in Jacksonville and the Bills played the Jags in the second week of the season. I lived with some friends from Florida State and we all went to the game together! I was the only Bills fan in a group of Jags fans, and Buffalo spanked the Jags! It was a great day, tailgating, drinking and a Buffalo win, it doesn’t get any better.

Do you own any Bills jerseys, and if so what ones?
@BillsFanatBirth: I haven’t purchased any of the new jerseys yet, but I plan on getting Kyle Williams and Stevie Johnson’s (once he signs a contract extension). I have no luck when it comes to jerseys. I own Poz’s, Evan’s, Lynch’s, Edward’s and my first jersey was Moulds.

Favorite current Bill?
@BillsFanatBirth: It’s hard for me to pick a favorite player. I love Nick Barnett, Shawne Merriman, Stevie Johnson & AJ Williams on Twitter, they make it fun. As for the man on the field, I have to go with the General, Fitz is the main guy. I love the gunslinging attitude and I hope he can play “Lights Out” this year. Who needs Luck, when you have Fitzmagic!

Favorite former Bill?
@BillsFanatBirth: This is another hard question to answer! I grew up watching Kelly, Thomas, Reed, Smith, Odomes, Talley, Bennett and so many other greats. My favorite player would have to be Steve Tasker. When I was growing up, I was always the smallest guy in school and I idolized Tasker because he was smaller than most guys on the field, but he played with the most heart. That never back down, always give 100% attitude really inspired me.

What is your favorite team to watch lose to the Bills?
@BillsFanatBirth: This is an easy one. I love watching the Cowboys lose. My brother never even watched football, but when Dallas played Buffalo for the first time in the Super Bowl, my brother acted like he was the biggest Cowboys fan ever. He was jumping up and down, screaming and shouting, acting like a real fool, and ever since, I’ve hated the Cowboys. So Buffalo better win week 10!

Best tailgate food?
@BillsFanatBirth: You can’t be a Buffalo fan without Buffalo wings. The hotter, the better!

Other sports you enjoy following? If so, favorite teams?
@BillsFanatBirth: I watch college football and baseball, maybe a little cricket. Just kidding about the cricket! I went to college at Florida State, so I root for the Noles, but my Irish pride is first and foremost! Fighting Irish will always be my favorite college team. As for baseball, I’m a Yankees fan and I despise the Phillies.

Lastly, what does “Bills Mafia” mean to you?
@BillsFanatBirth: @mrdeadlier says it best when he talks about #BillsMafia being a group of Bills fans, that enjoy talking Bills football without the negativity of other Bills fans. #BillsMafia is all about optimism. Throw in a little harrassment of ESPN analyst, bloggers and players of other teams, and you got yourself a good time.

About Del Reid

Del Reid became a Bills fan shortly after coming into this world, having been raised in a home that actually had a framed picture of OJ Simpson on the wall in the living room (until it came down in 1994). Del has always had a passion for bringing people together to celebrate things they share in common. As a result, he (quite accidentally) ended up co-founding the #BillsMafia movement among Bills fans in social media -- which to this point is the coolest thing that has ever happened to him aside from his relationship with God, his wife, and his two awesome kids.
